Back from the Dead

I'm reviving this blog so I can try to push towards becoming a RT certified critic!  I need 50 reviews before June, I think and I'm well on that way with 8 reviews coming in the near future for January!  I'm going to keep working at it and hopefully make the cut in 2026. Reviews will not only be on here, but also on YouTube as I work at ramping that channel up.  The goal is to start to be known for more than predicting the Oscars, but for reviewing films and perhaps starting a Columbo podcast.  I'm finally at double digits, it's time to work towards 30,000 subs to meet the first requirement. Time to roll up those sleeves and get to work!

How Well Did We Do in Predicting the 2022 Oscar Nominees?

Let's take a look back at how I did at predicting the 2022 Oscars and compare the results from what I did last year: 2021:  Big 6 (29/34) (.850) 2022:  Big 6 (31/35) (.886) 2021:  Overall (91/119) (.765) 2022:  Overall (92/120) (.767) Improved in both aspects from last year.  If it weren't for the shorts, I could have made a run at 80 percent overall. The Big 6 Nominations: (31/35) (.886) Best Picture: (10/10) The Power of the Dog Belfast Dune ================== Licorice Pizza King Richard CODA West Side Story Don't Look Up ================== Drive My Car Nightmare Alley Thoughts:   Felt like Car would make the cut due to the international voters.  The question was the 10th spot which went to guild favorite Alley ahead of other options. Best Actor: (5/5) Will Smith (King Richard) Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) Andrew Garfield (Tick Tick Boom) ================================== Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth) Javier Bardem (Being...

Predicting the 2022 Academy Award Nominations

Once again, it's about that time to read the tea leaves and learn which films will be visited by Oscar and which ones will be left wanting on Tuesday morning.  I'll break down the nomination by category and later this week reveal how well I did.  Hopefully, it'll be better than last year when I got 75 percent right (and 85 percent on the Big 6 categories).   Only time will tell.  Let's go!  Listing everything by likelihood that its name will be called on Tuesday: The Big 6 Nominations: Best Picture: The Power of the Dog Belfast Dune ================== Licorice Pizza King Richard CODA West Side Story Don't Look Up ================== Drive My Car Nightmare Alley Spoilers:   Tick Tick Boom, Being the Ricardos, Cyrano, House of Gucci, The Tragedy of Macbeth You can break down best picture into three tiers.  The first tier consists of films that have been consistently at the top or close the entire way and feel like locks.  The five films in...

Results of My Predictions of the 2021 Oscar Nominations

As it turns out, I ended up getting 76.5% (91/119) and 85 % on the big nominations (29/34 ) correct. Now that the nominations have been revealed, it's time to take an honest look and see how we did: The Categories That’ll Get Announced on Monday Morning: Best Picture: (7/9) The Father Judas and the Black Messiah Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Mank Minari Nomadland One Night in Miami Promising Young Woman Sound of Metal The Trial of the Chicago 7 Thoughts:  It was a distinctive possibility that The Father would sneak in.  But as it turns out, it wasn't Sound of Metal that would take the hit.  But the August Wilson adaption ultimately fell short.  I guess One Night in Miami didn't drive enough passion to make the cut, either. Best Actor: (5/5) Riz Ahmed---Sound of Metal Chadwick Boseman---Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Anthony Hopkins---The Father Gary Oldman---Mank Steven Yeun---Minari Thoughts:  Turns out we were on the money with this category.  I mean, Oldman wa...
